bon odori 2008

last saturday, gene and i went to the 32nd bon odori - 2008
this event has been going on for years and we only got to know it this year... *shrug*
it is organised yearly by the japan embassy together with japanese expatriate & immigrant's society, participants are from the international schools around kuala lumpur. the event was held at the panasonic sports complex in shah alam.

here are some snapshots of the colours and people at the event.

well, of couse the cutest and best subjects to shoot were kids in their cute kimonos and slippers.

the stage was set in the middle of the field, people crowd around it. by 7:00pm children and teenagers performers were up on stage dancing to the beat of the drum, and soon the crowd below followed the movements. it was like swimming in a school of fish... you'll have to follow to the flow and rhythm or not be in the crowd at all. turning and clapping and circling and skipping in a slow paced manner.

i was surprise at the massive crowd that turned out that day, how did we miss it all these years? everybody was happily dancing, apart from those snacking japanese food over at the food stalls, yum! i am sure the japanese expats were the happiest to be able to celebrate this in malaysia.

  1. Hi Alison, beautiful photographs, outstanding colors and you caught those real great moments too.
I have always admired as well love anything Japanese, except their food, ha ha.
Will see any movie that has Japan inside, 'Last Samurai, Letters from Iwo Jima, Memoirs of a Geisha', to name a few.
    Love that last pic...good photo.
    Have a great week, Lee.
