st peter's church

oldest catholic church in malaysia, built by the dutch administration in 1710

a mix of east and west

st peter's church, melaka, canon 350d

i was back in my hometown melaka last month and had the opportunity to visit st peter's church, i had always wanted to go back there, one of the reason was to feel the space and energy in the church, and the other was because it brings back happy memories. i have not set foot in it i think, for more than 20 years.

when i was a kid back in the 80's, we always spent christmas at my uncle francis's house, their family are of portuguese decent and every christmas eve we'll attend midnight mass at the church, though half the time i would be nodding off sleepily as i didn't understand what was going on, but i'd be wide awake after all the prayers were done and everyone wishing everyone merry christmas, laughing, smiling, hugging, cheering. it was a simple affair, simple people in a simple small town, there were just kindness, love, happiness, and joy, these feelings are contagious. that's all i could remember and i am happy i get to experience the nice warm feelings.

  2. As a child, I was drawn to churches. I loved going in, and just sitting in the pews...I must have known somewhere deep inside that each church, no matter how humble or small, has a great sense of peace within it.

This is a great memory, Alison, and I'm glad you had a chance to revisit this church once again! It looks lovely...warm and peaceful.
