I had the most enjoyable Sunday learning about books and bookmaking. It was run by Association of Book Crafts New Zealand which I am now a member of. The workshop was held at Motat's bindery. These are the tools professional bookbinders use to make books.
A beautifully made book! (Please excuse the not so clear photo)

Roger facilitate the whole class and Mary showed us some of her work.

Mary's books. Aren't they just gorgeous! I came home inspired by all the learning and have in fact have some ideas for my bookmaking too. I'm glad I attended the class.

Back in the studio, I'm in the process of making some woodblock printed journals. August will be about getting messy with some printing work :-)

I may not be a bookmaker with all the gadgets and machines but I am happy making books with my simple tools for anyone who enjoys writing in them.

  1. An interesting post. It's good to see that you enjoyed it. Flighty xx

    1. Thanks Flighty! It was a well spent Sunday. xx

  2. I love my little elephant journal! I am using it to record bits of poetry that I like and may use as captions for photos or mixed media pieces. You are already doing a great job, but yes, always fun to learn new things too!!

    1. Oh, I'm so glad to hear the wee elephant journal is put to good use. Poetry! Awesome! I wish I can write poetry and poems, but alas... no such talent. Yes, always fn to learn new things!

  3. Hi Alison,
I think you'llhave a great time making your books. I love the prints of your journals, especially the butterflies.
    Have a great day:)

    1. I sure do enjoy making books as you do with your gardening! :-)
I do hope to finish them soon so I can list them on my Etsy store.
      Have a great day Lydia!
